Lorton Entertainment, the makers of the hit documentary ‘Rooney’ released in February, have announced its newest release, Horsepower. Made in conjunction with Equine Productions, Horsepower will launch on 23rd September exclusively on Prime Video in UK & Ireland. Horsepower is a compelling four-part documentary series that provides hitherto unseen access and insight to the world of horseracing.

Filmed from autumn 2020 through to the summer of 2021, this four-part series captures a momentous period in the lives and careers of its two main protagonists, racehorse trainer Andrew Balding and jockey Oisin Murphy. Based at the beautiful and historic training stables of Kingsclere in Hampshire, Andrew is striving to take his yard to the next level. To do so he must achieve success at the highest grade, in the elite races such as the Derby and at Royal Ascot.
Meanwhile, Andrew’s principal jockey, Oisin Murphy, is facing the prospect of a devastating ban following a positive test for cocaine allied with the fear of not knowing whether he will subsequently be able to re-build his burgeoning career. Combining remarkable human-interest stories with unrivalled behind the scenes access and insight to the sport of horseracing, the series covers a nine-month period as the duo prepare for the biggest week of their year at one of the most prestigious events in the global sporting calendar, the five days of Royal Ascot.
Horsepower is produced and directed by Dave James and John Maxse from Equine Productions.
Leading Racehorse trainer, Andrew Balding comments; “In the twenty years since I’ve been in charge at Kingsclere no one else has been given the level of access provided to the Horsepower team for this series. Viewers get to go behind the scenes and see how a racehorse trainer and his team operate, including the meticulous preparation ahead of races both abroad and in the UK, culminating with the five days of Royal Ascot. Horsepower showcases the highs and lows of this incredible sport and I am very proud to be a part of it.”
Champion jockey, Oisin Murphy states;“All the ups and downs of being a champion jockey are laid bare on Horsepower, this is where I tell my story. I allowed the Horsepower cameras to see me at my best and my worst because I want people to understand the pressures that come with success for a jockey. The series brilliantly captures this during what was a very challenging time in my career.”
Broadcaster and sister to Andrew, Clare Balding said; “Horsepower offers a great insight into how hard my brother has worked to turn Kingsclere into a training operation that can compete with the biggest and the best. I’m so proud of Andrew, his wife Anna Lisa and the team they have built around them and I found this series incredibly revealing – there’s stuff in here that I never knew and have never seen so I can safely say that it’s intriguing and the camera work is sensational.”
Julian Bird, CEO Lorton Entertainment, said: “Horsepower tells a story that has not been covered in this manner or depth before and in doing so reveals so many fascinating and moving storylines. It will enthral those with an existing interest in racing and intrigue and delight newcomers to the sport. We believe it will appeal to a range of audiences and has the potential to cross over in the manner that both ‘Drive to Survive’ and ‘The Last Dance’ have done.
Goldridge Media and Protagonist Pictures have launched sales on the highly anticipated 4 x 1 hour docuseries “Horsepower,” The series is now available to license internationally from Danny Goldman.
This is the latest documentary from Lorton Entertainment, following the BBC’s phenomenon Bros: After the Screaming Stops, award-winningOasis documentary Supersonic and the cinematic release of George Ezra’s film End-to-End.
